In modern times, a low-nutrient diet, high rates of obesity and a sedentary lifestyle have contributed to the deterioration of sperm quality.
A few studies have proven that a man's eating habits directly affect fertility. Although no dietary pattern has been found to date that has been confirmed to improve sperm parameters and successful conception rates, the Mediterranean diet is suggested as the most appropriate diet for the health of the expectant father. The latter includes frequent consumption of:
- Fruits and vegetables: rich in antioxidants that help maintain the redox balance
- Seafood: a source of polyunsaturated fatty acids that act as antioxidants.
- Poultry: main source of protein. Avoiding red and processed meat.
- Legumes: source of protein and fiber.
Avoiding the consumption of trans-fats, soft drinks, processed foods and sweets has a beneficial effect on sperm quality.
At the same time, high caffeine intake on a daily basis has been linked to increased testosterone levels which can affect the process of spermatogenesis, the same is not the case with mild caffeine consumption, after all the antioxidant effect of coffee is useful for the body.
Regular alcohol consumption degrades sperm quality, while occasional consumption probably does not have a negative effect. More specifically, reckless alcohol consumption has been linked to increased oxidative stress, high DNA fragmentation and disruption of reproductive hormones.
Finally, exercise and quality sleep are two important components of everyday life that can contribute to a man's health and, by extension, to fertility, for which more research is needed at a scientific level.
