Can temperature affect sperm quality?

The male reproductive system is located, not by chance, outside the body, in the area of the scrotum.

The reason? High temperature is not a favorable condition for spermatogenesis and sperm maturation. Appropriate thermoregulation is achieved in the scrotum.

High temperature seems to have a negative effect both on the basic sperm parameters: sperm count, motility, vitality and morphology, as well as on DNA integrity and oxidative stress.

But what can cause an increase in temperature in the scrotum?

Factors of everyday life that may be related to the environment and living conditions as well as some urological findings.

  • Presence of varicocele
  • Inflammations
  • Obesity
  • Fever
  • Working conditions
  • Hot baths - Sauna
  • Tight pants - underwear
  • transportation ways (bike, professional drivers)

Even the changing of the seasons of the year can bring about fluctuations in sperm parameters, with the hot summer months often having a negative effect on spermatogenesis.

Most disorders caused by increased temperature are reversed by returning it to normal, for the scrotum, levels (about 2 degrees lower than the rest of the body).

So for a better fertilization capacity, we make sure, as much as possible, to avoid activities and habits that raise the temperature in the genital area.
